Summer Meeting and Workshop

At the Annual Meeting in February, chapter members recommended that the Chapter hold both a summer meeting and a wildlife workshop this year.  The Board is soliciting ideas from you, the members, about your ideas for both a summer meeting and a workshop.

As we all know, expenses are increasing for traveling out of state to the Joint Annual Meeting when it occurs in New Mexico.  With agency budgets putting limits on out-of-state travel, some of our members are not able to attend the JAM each year.  Those limitations make in-state activities more important to our members.

As we know, purposes of our Chapter include doing good things for wildlife and serving our members.  A summer meeting can be an opportunity for members to learn something about Arizona wildlife, do something positive for wildlife, and to reconnect with other wildlife professionals.  Usually, our summer meetings have been in the field, a time when we spend a weekend doing some wildlife survey or project, camp out, bring our families, have a face-to-face membership meeting, and spend time talking with our peers.

Have you got an idea for a summer meeting?    The board is discussing several ideas, but we’d like to hear your ideas.  What would excite you about coming to a summer meeting?  Do you need volunteer help on an important project?  What would you like to do or like to learn?

The Board is also discussing holding a workshop either this year or next.  Have you got an idea for a training opportunity?  Is there some training you’d love but just can’t seem to find at an affordable price?  Sometimes the Chapter has been able to bring specialists to the state to train our members in an important wildlife subject, maybe an opportunity that our agencies have not been able to fund.  Sometimes our own members are able to train other members in specialty skills.  Workshop ideas that have been discussed include:

  • How to do Powerpoint presentations
  • Statistics
  • Wildlife telemetry
  • Wind energy
  • Lead Ammunition
  • Outdoor skills
  • Wildlife handling
  • Dutch oven cooking

What training would you like to see the Chapter host?  What would you attend?

If you have ideas for either a summer meeting or a workshop, please contact Joan Scott at jscott@azgfd.gov.
